Lipitor Manufacturer Tops Forbes Global 2000 List
Every year, the Forbes Global 2000 ranks the top 2,000 public companies in the world. This year, Pfizer found itself at the very top of the list. Pfizer, a multinational corporation and Lipitor manufacturer based in New York, is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Lipitor, a statin drug which lowers body cholesterol levels, has been among Pfizer’s best sellers.
Controversy Surrounding the Lipitor Manufacturer
However, despite its recent status boost thanks to Forbes, the Lipitor manufacturer has found itself at the center of much controversy after reports came out revealing that Lipitor, a drug meant to control cholesterol levels, could actually cause type 2 diabetes. The Canadian study of 471,250 Ontario residents that initially concluded that certain statins, including Lipitor, may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes ended by saying that physicians should weigh the risks and benefits carefully before prescribing statin medications. This study used patient information from three Canadian databases on 66-year old men and women who were using prescribed statins for up to five years. More than half of the prescriptions were for Lipitor.
After Pfizer acquired the Warner-Lambert Company, the original Lipitor manufacturer, aggressive marketing promotions made the drug one of the most popular medications in the world, earning revenue of more than $125 billion before 2011 when generic versions became available.
Problems with Lipitor
Lipitor stops the liver from producing an enzyme essential to the formation of cholesterol. However, the drug has been shown to potentially increase the risk of diabetes among women, especially those that are postmenopausal. Pfizer knew or should have known about the serious statin side effects but failed to adequately warn consumers of the risk. Therefore, attorneys like those affiliated with the American Injury Attorney Group believe that the Lipitor manufacturer should be held accountable.
Those with high blood pressure, elevated triglyceride levels, high blood sugar levels, or excess weight are already predisposed to type 2 diabetes, and are thus at an even greater risk when prescribed Lipitor. Women wronged by the Lipitor manufacturer are claiming that Lipitor is unsafe because Pfizer failed to warn patients and doctors about known side effects and failed to investigate complaints once they began appearing.
